Diem has compiled 1100 listings, in a variety of languages, many from the 1880s to the 1920s, when kites were used in meteorological research. Hobbyist titles dominate the 1930s; numbers of kite books, primarily how-to manuals, grew again in the 1980s. Diem relies on several unpublished sources, as well as his own research, for his compilation.
